Overview

The IT Intern supports the Information Technology department by observing and assisting with day-to-day IT security and network operations while gaining hands-on exposure to enterprise technology environments. This on-site, unpaid internship is located in Granite City, Illinois.

Responsibilities

  • Observe daily activities of the IT security team, including monitoring security alerts and logs, reviewing potential threats and incidents, and learning how security policies and procedures are applied.
  • Shadow the network operations team to learn about network performance monitoring, basic troubleshooting, and infrastructure components such as switches, routers, firewalls, VPNs, and Wi-Fi.
  • Participate in relevant IT meetings and debriefs, including security incident reviews, change management discussions, and infrastructure planning sessions.
  • Gain exposure to cybersecurity fundamentals such as least privilege, defense in depth, and patch management.
  • Learn to use network monitoring tools, ticketing systems, and documentation best practices.
  • Promote Chestnut’s culture of customer service excellence by adhering to organizational behavioral standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality and protect the security of all organizational, financial, and client information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Unpaid internship for students in their junior or senior year of undergraduate study or individuals working toward a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to follow instructions.
  • Respect for confidentiality and security protocols.
  • Good communication skills, a learning mindset, and professional behavior.
  • Reliable, punctual, able to work on-site, and must have personal transportation. Occasional reimbursable travel between Chestnut offices may be required.
