Overview

Chestnut Health Systems is seeking an experienced, dynamic, and dedicated Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to serve as an integral part of the senior leadership team.

 

The CFO is a strategic leader responsible for refining and improving existing business models and developing new models for current and future changes to health care economics. The CFO is expected to participate in the financial and functional decision-making processes necessary for the successful attainment of the organization’s operational and financial goals. The CFO is responsible for organizational financial operations, day-to-day fiscal management, and supporting strategic growth.

 

As a corporate officer, the CFO is expected to contribute to Chestnut’s practice of leveraging relationships to advance the business by representing the organization with governmental agencies, regulators, partner agencies, community partners, and beyond.

 

This position can be based in Bloomington or Granite City, IL.

Responsibilities

Senior Leadership and Strategy

  • Collaborate with the CEO, corporate officers, and executive leadership to develop and implement strategic plans aligned with the organization's mission and goals.
  • Lead financial policy, programs, and processes, providing vision and advice on strategic growth opportunities.
  • Mentor and guide the finance team, fostering professional development, setting priorities, and ensuring accountability.
  • Champion organizational transformation, promoting a culture of shared ownership, quality improvement, and cost control.
  • Oversee efficient procurement practices focused on cost containment and grant management practices ensuring compliance and timeliness.

Financial Management

  • Develop and implement financial strategies to support the organization’s mission.
  • Oversee financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, payroll, and revenue optimization.
  • Drive cross-functional collaboration to optimize financial performance.
  • Evaluate and procure financial systems to enhance operational efficiency and informed decision-making.
  • Participate in utilization management to reduce delivery costs.
  • Prepare and present financial reports with analysis and recommendations to leadership.
  • Manage relationships with external financial partners like banks, auditors, and service providers.

Budgeting and Forecasting

  • Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with program managers and stakeholders.
  • Monitor budget performance and provide analysis and recommendations to leadership.
  • Develop financial forecasting models for long-term planning.
  • Equip program managers with tools to track and manage expenses, including labor utilization.

Board Relations and Reporting

  • Present financial performance, risks, and opportunities to the Board of Directors.
  • Collaborate with the CEO and Board on financial policies aligned with strategic goals.
  • Act as staff lead for the Budget and Finance Committee and Audit Committee.

Tax Filing and Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with financial reporting and regulatory requirements, including tax filings and audits.
  • Submit timely financial and utilization reports to funders per contract agreements.
  • Manage compliance with federally qualified health center grant requirements and reporting.

Other Responsibilities

  • Promote a culture of customer service excellence by adhering to behavioral standards.
  • Represent the organization externally with stakeholders and partners.
  • Maintain confidentiality and ensure the security of financial and client information.
  • Uphold ethical standards in all business dealings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field; MBA, CPA, or equivalent certification required
  • 5-10 years in finance/accounting, with 5+ years in management (preferred); senior financial leadership, strategic planning, and execution experience
  • Deep expertise in financial operations (accounting, budgeting, forecasting, compliance)
  • Strong ability to manage, allocate, and control large-scale finances
  • Proficient in presenting financial analysis to non-financial stakeholders
  • Expertise in grants management, procurement, and cost control
  • Knowledge of financial systems, tools, and data-driven decision-making
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building with internal/external stakeholders, including Boards of Directors
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with finance tech solutions preferred
  • Experience in nonprofit and grants funding preferred
  • Strong ethical practices, confidentiality, and customer service commitment

The anticipated starting pay for new hires for this position is between $225,000 - $275,000 annual salary. There are several factors taken into consideration in determining base pay, including but not limited to: job-related qualifications, skills, education, experience, local market conditions, and internal equity.
